Beyond These Stars — Kewa & exploration

Kewa is not just a moving platform. Settlement pollution and biome quality affect the whale, while travel consumes energy and temperature changes the risks of a route. Plan settlement supply and the whale’s recovery together. The references below cover systems, not a complete story walkthrough; no ending dialogue is reproduced.

Travelling the Galaxy with Kewa

The Peeps and Kewa have finally made contact and agreed to journey through the Galaxy together. Space is beautiful but dangerous. There are many things to consider in order to keep both Kewa and the Peeps safe while navigating the stars.

Kewa

The Peep’s Settlement impacts the wellbeing of their companion, and Kewa will go against their wishes in order to care for themself if they must.

Health
Kewa’s Health bar is displayed on the top-left side of the Info Bar on the Galaxy Map and is divided into multiple sections.

- The Green portion of the bar is Kewa’s health.

- The Yellow portion represents health that can be gained from improving Kewa’s biome.

- If a Purple portion appears, Toxic Areas are damaging Kewa’s biome. Clean them up to reverse the effect.

- If an Orange portion appears, Kewa is Overheated. Moving to somewhere cool will slowly reverse this effect. Kewa will choose somewhere cold to go on their own if they become too Overheated.

Increasing Kewa’s Health has many positive effects - Kewa will move and restore Energy faster if their Health increases past certain thresholds. These gains can be reversed by the damaging effects above, however.

Energy
Kewa’s Energy is displayed on the right side of the Info Bar in the Galaxy Map.

Just like Peeps, Kewa uses Energy to do their work - in other words, to travel. The longer the journey, the more Energy it will consume. Also, like Peeps, eating restores Kewa’s Energy. If they can, they will pass through nodes in Debris Fields to eat as they travel. They can also find Asteroids to eat at nodes that contain Asteroid Belts.

However, Kewa must stop to digest their food and turn it into available Energy. If reaching a destination will use more Energy than they have available, they will set a waypoint where they can stop and restore Energy before continuing the trip. The placement and position of any waypoints for a requested journey are displayed on the Galaxy Map.

Temperature

Kewa’s current temperature is displayed on the bottom-left of the Info Bar on the Galaxy Map. As Kewa moves throughout the galaxy, their temperature will change. This will impact the climate of their biome, affecting both Kewa themselves and the Peeps.

Food for Peeps grows best at moderate temperatures, and not at all in extreme cold or heat. Kewa vastly prefers extreme cold. High temperatures will make them overheat, temporarily damaging their biome until they cool down again.

How hot or cold a galaxy node is depends on its proximity to stars and the size of the star it’s close to.

- Small stars don’t output a lot of heat and only affect a small area of space around them.

- Medium stars output the perfect amount of heat to keep Kewa at a neutral temperature when orbiting them. They affect a slightly larger area of space around them.

- Large stars output a lot of heat and will eventually make Kewa slightly overheated when orbiting them. They affect a large area of space around them.

- Extra-large stars are very hot and will eventually make Kewa severely overheated when orbiting them. They affect a huge area of space around them.

Because stars affect the galaxy nodes around them (not just the one they’re located in), nodes can gather heat from more than one star. These nodes are usually very warm, as the heat from multiple stars adds together.

One of the unique overlays in the galaxy map is a Temperature Overlay, which displays the temperature of all visible nodes without needing to select them.

Settling Planets

Settling ancestral Peep planets requires the Settlement Spaceship and establishing the ability to ship resources between Kewa and settled planets.

Automated Shipping

Space Ports can be configured to automatically export and import resources between locations using assigned Trade Spaceships.
Automated shipping requires at minimum a pair of Space Ports, one exporting and one importing, in order to automatically shift a resource from one location to another.
To configure a Space Port for automated shipping, select the Space Port and go to the Automated Shipping Tab in the building’s Info Card. Selecting the Edit button will open the Choose Resource panel. Once a resource is selected, it will appear in the automated shipping list.
From the automated shipping list, a resource can be set to export or import, and the reserved storage space for that resource can be adjusted.

For exporting resources, the Space Port will not attempt a delivery until at least 10 of the resource is stored at the Space Port. A delivery order will be created once the following requirements are met:

- There is at least one Space Port that is set to import the resource in the same galaxy node.

- There is at least 10 reserved storage slots available in the importing Space Port.

The delivery will occur as soon as a Trade Spaceship set to Auto becomes available (i.e. not refueling or performing another delivery).

For importing resources, the Space Port will not request a delivery until there is at least 10 reserved storage slots available. A delivery order will be created once the following requirements are met:

- There is at least one Space Port that is set to export the resource in the same galaxy node

- There is at least 10 of the resource stored in the exporting Space Port

The delivery will occur as soon as a Trade Spaceship set to Auto becomes available (i.e. not refueling or performing another delivery).

Spaceports cannot be moved or demolished if configured for Automated Shipping. To move/demolish a Spaceport, remove ALL automated shipping configurations and demolish any attached Landing Pads first.
