Die in the Dungeon Beginner Guide

Learn the Die in the Dungeon board, dice, relic and potion decision loop without an unverified tier list or invented drop rates.

First-run decision loop

Build around what each die does, where it must sit and how reliably its faces meet the value you need. Relics and potions should support that plan, not replace it with an unsupported tier list.

Evidence label: this orientation uses official descriptions and v5.1.1 display data. It is not a playtested fastest-clear route, character ranking or boss walkthrough.

1. Treat placement as part of the die

The official game description calls combat a spatial puzzle: dice buff and interact with one another based on placement. Read the type description before judging a die by face values alone. Boost, Close Boost and several Mirror types have positional language, so an isolated average cannot describe their full value.

2. Compare consistency with ceiling

A regular D6 has faces 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and averages 3.5. The configured Longshot D6 has 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 12 and averages 2. The latter can exceed the former's maximum, but misses more often. Put both into the probability calculator and use the threshold your effect actually needs.

3. Properties change the question

Face value is only one axis. Glass limits repeat use, Heavy changes placement behavior, Grow can change value, and Retry or Retain alter consistency in different ways. Search the property reference and plan around the text shown for your version instead of treating every property as a flat bonus.

4. Choose relics by trigger, not rarity alone

Search the relic database for the mechanic already present in your board—Attack, Block, Poison, reroll, draw or a specific property. Rarity and style help narrow the list, but serialized presence does not prove that the entry is available to your character or in the current reward pool.

5. Read both potion outcomes

A potion with a condition may have success and failure branches even when its headline effect is attractive. The potion list labels configured conditional records and the dice being rolled. It does not publish invented success rates when the condition text or live state is required.

6. Keep the version boundary visible

This data comes from 5.1.1. The 5.2.0 notes add a Codex section for dice properties and other changes. If an in-game entry differs from this page, trust the current game and report the mismatch with the affected page and version.

Sources, version & limits

Local evidence: supplied GOG build 59960768222754130, game version 5.1.1 / 119.0f2f. Display names, descriptions, categories, face arrays and identifying icons are extracted without running the game. Catalog presence does not verify an unlock route, reward pool, drop rate or behavior during play.

Version warning: release notes list 5.2.0 / 120.0f2 from October 1, 2026. This snapshot is therefore one release behind. The official Steam page is the source for the public feature and advertised content counts.
