Penguin Colony · Getting started
Choose the right penguin, follow the wind and turn awkward climbs into manageable routes while learning when to slide, swim or switch forms.
Official game analysis · Version: release data, reviewed 18 October 2026.

Start by learning to waddle, slide, hop and swim in an open area. Follow the wind when you lose the route, but look around camps and side passages before committing to the next major landmark.
Switch penguins to solve the obstacle in front of you. A Baby Emperor fits narrow gaps; a Rockhopper handles high hops and steep ground; an Emperor can operate weight-sensitive mechanisms. Both juvenile forms cannot swim, so plan a way back before entering water.
Collect Insight along the way. Each collected entry adds one point to maximum stamina. Ordinary land sliding can recover stamina, while rough ruins and hopping rocks can drain it. A clean landing after an aerial trick can also help refill the bar.
For longer water routes, try a Gentoo. For ledges, use a Rockhopper and check your landing before accelerating. A large Emperor is useful for sliding and mechanisms, but does not replace a climbing specialist.
If you are stuck, use Reawaken. Treat teleporters as commitments: they are one-way, and returning immediately may not be possible. Listen for crevasses and slow down before blind drops.
Use the chapter and region lists to revisit discoveries. Roger’s photographs are collected objects; taking a picture with the Chinstrap’s camera is a different action. After the expedition, review its results and compare discoveries before deciding what the story means.
Practical route choices
Cliffs and narrow passages: use the Rockhopper for height, then switch to the Baby Emperor for a gap. This is a sequence of terrain choices, not a permanent character build.
Water and shoreline exploration: choose the Gentoo for swimming and water exits. Do not follow it into deep water with either juvenile form.
Ruins and mechanisms: bring an Emperor or Baby King to a weight-sensitive device. Collect nearby Insight first to give yourself a larger stamina reserve.
Story and observation: use the Magellanic’s unusual perception and the Chinstrap’s camera when you want to examine a place from another angle. More speed is not always the most useful advantage.
