Vital Shell Beginner Guide: Shells & Gems
Plan a Vital Shell run with shell comparisons, weapon selection and four-gem resonance examples. Follow build-specific evidence without tier-list guesses.
Choose a shell for its starting weapon and defensive profile, check weapon compatibility, and plan four gem affinities before filling the final socket. Compare upgrades by their effect on that plan rather than by the largest isolated damage number.
1. Start with your shell’s loadout
Koenig starts with Hand of Justice and a configuration of 25 max health, 16 speed and five armor. Its localized description emphasizes blocking and survivability. Bloodfang starts with Crimson Duet; its description explicitly limits additional weapons to light weapons. Mirage, Sidewinder and Meteor start with Shifting Staff, Annihilator and World Eater respectively.
Use the shell comparison for growth and unlock descriptions. Those descriptions are evidence from the supplied build, not a tested progression walkthrough.
2. Compare the weapon as a whole
Bloom Cannon has a base damage setting of 50, two attacks per second and eight ammo. Riot Needle has a base damage setting of eight and a different attack pattern. Multiplying damage by attack speed alone does not establish which is stronger: spread, projectiles, downtime and bonuses can change the result.
Filter the weapon table by size first, then compare its damage type and timing. All 16 listed weapons configure four sockets.
3. Choose a resonance pattern before socket four
Four White gems select Purification. Two White and two Blue select Fulguration. White, Blue, Black and Red select Fragmentation; any other four distinct colors also select it. Gem order does not change the color-counting result.
A subtle difference matters for unlocks: three White plus one Blue still selects Purification, but it does not pass the separate single-color gem-unlock condition. Try both patterns in the resonance calculator.
4. Choose upgrades that support the plan
Lapis Lazuli configures a 10% critical-chance bonus, Onyx a 10% damage bonus, Opal a 5% lifesteal bonus, Sardonyx a 10% attack-speed bonus and Tourmaline a 10% potency bonus. These are starting points for comparing effects, not a universal best build.
Read protocol and special effects alongside your resonance. Keep level-up and meta upgrades separate when checking what a run actually grants.
