The Mailroom · Beginner guide & mail sorting
A first-shift checklist, the rules for valid mail and practical fixes for rejected deliveries or a stalled workday.
Start each shift
Leave the elevator, find the time clock and hold the clock-in action. Answer the intercom when it has a message. Retrieve the directory from the cabinet in the machine room and bring it to the sorting table. Follow the on-screen action labels: a progress ring means hold the button until it finishes. Settings → Accessibility → Accessible labels helps with hard-to-read labels.

Read the address, then the directory
Inspect each letter on both sides. Compare its recipient with today's directory: a person alone or a department alone can be valid; if both are printed, they must match the same entry and floor. The destination is 666 5th Street, Modesto, CA 95350. A similar name, a wrong department or a different street number is not a match. The directory changes on Days 3, 4 and 5, so recheck it each morning.

What goes into the furnace?
Burn advertisements, service offers, government and debt-collection mail, unknown or inactive recipients, mismatched departments and wrong addresses. Burn mail FROM Asta Roth even when the destination looks convincing. Pepe Silvia letters are junk too. Do not judge by stamps or envelope colour. Ordinary lab reports are letters: check their address; a recipe card instead asks you to prepare an order.

Send one job at a time
Set an empty canister on the table and open it. Hold the letter over its opening until Insert appears, then hold the action to completion. Pick up the canister and insert it into the tube for the recipient's floor. Wait for its return. For a potion, insert the filled bottle; for meat, insert the pieces for that one order. Keep different orders in separate canisters.
Keep the furnace burning
Collect wood from the stack in the machine room and insert it into the furnace when needed. Wood adds 60 seconds of burning time. The furnace spell resets the fire to 666 seconds. Burn unwanted mail and leftover meat only after checking which orders still need them.
No new mail or a rejected delivery?
Finish all work from the current batch before ringing for more. For a returned canister, put it down, open it and inspect the contents: check the recipient, floor and recipe again. Red or disabled tubes can mean an unopened floor or a stopped compressor. Repair the machine before trying again. A vague rejection note is not a precise diagnosis. If an object is out of reach, use Return objects to table in the pause menu.
Finish the day safely
When all work and the day's story event are complete, clock out at the time clock and use the elevator to go home. Collect payment before leaving. Quitting during an unfinished shift can discard progress since the start of that day; use the completed shift as your stopping point.
