BRIDGE TO FABER LABS
Show image
The only ground-based method for reaching the old prison island, the bridge to Faber Labs was primarily used by employees and the occasional mysterious delivery. As the Conflict of Nations encroached on the city of Rugosa, the Acacian military erected barriers and blockades all along the bridge to ensure that Terragonian forces could not acquire the unknown capabilities that Selena Faber’s technology and research could provide them. Not long before the arrival of the Rifters, an artillery strike rained down on the facility, destroying much of the historical site.
FABER LABS EXTERIOR
Show image
Originally built as a fortification to protect the city of Rugosa from attacking forces during the First War of Independence, the island structure was eventually converted into a maximum-security prison facility that housed many of Acacia’s most dangerous criminals. Over the years, it became too costly to maintain the prison. Many suspected this was due to the unnecessary additions that were made to the old fortress to accomodate the growing number of inmates. Eventually, the island prison was decommissioned and abandoned. It wasn’t until about twenty years ago that a scientist named Dr. Selena Faber purchased the island and converted the facility into a research complex. Despite her company’s goal of creating advancements in technology, she left the exterior of the structures untouched and in their original state.
SEWER HIDEOUT
Show image
After the Rifters arrived, the survivors of the initial attack fled into the sewers to hide. This dark, damp underbelly of the city is where the Thorns were formed. Allies and enemies alike were forced to live underground and work together against a new common threat. So far, it has been the safest place for them to hide. Their theory that Rifters must be unable to survive below the surface seems the most likely explanation. Despite not being the most ideal of living conditions, the Thorns never thought they would refer to the sewers as “home.”
MANHOLES
Show image
Before the Forever War began, the smell that emerged from manholes was enough to make your average civilian steer clear of them. Most people didn’t want to know what was down there. “Out of sight, out of mind”, they said. But when the Rifters came, the survivors of the intial attack had to swallow their pride and descend into the darkness. It wasn’t long before they got used to the smell. Maybe it was because it followed them wherever they went. Now, when out on supply runs, instead of avoiding the city’s access points to the sewers, the Thorns view them as gateways to refuge.
GRAND RUGOSA HOTEL
Show image
Built in the aftermath of the First War of Independence, the Grand Rugosa Hotel was a symbol of renewed peace in Acacia. It welcomed visitors and dignitaries from all over, including those who were considered to be former enemies. Its solid construction allowed the structure to survive the Second War of Independence, but the hotel filed for bankruptcy in the years after. Since then it has been revitalized and refurbished by new owners. Its grand re-opening was a proud moment for the city. Now it sits in partial ruin due to the Conflict of Nations and the Forever War against the Rifters.
THORN STASH
Show image
The Thorns came to realize that storing all of their gathered supplies in the sewers was not the best course of action. Although the Rifters have remained above ground, the Thorns could not take the chance that all of their hard work would be undone if that ever changed. A select few locations throughout the city were used as safehouses, where Thorns between missions could go to resupply and even rest for a bit. These locations were kept secret, marked only by the Thorn symbol painted near their entrances. There were very few keys to unlock the doors. Keys that were given only to Thorns who were setting out on supply runs. As more and more resistance fighters fell in combat against the Rifters, the whereabouts of those keys became unknown.
RIVERSIDE MARKET
Show image
Once a bustling city landmark, this park along the canal was a place for people of all ages to enjoy. On the first weekend of every month, the park hosted a market where local farmers and artisans could sell their products to the public. It serves as an attraction to visitors staying at the nearby Grand Rugosa Hotel. The food was always fresh and the sounds of laughter could be heard across the waterway. Now, anything of value that remained has been looted by the Thorns, leaving nothing but a memory of what used to be.
HALL OF RECORDS
Show image
When it was becoming increasingly clear that the Terragonian army was going to reach the Rugosa City Hall, officials made the call to relocate operations to a less enticing structural landmark. They used to their advantage the fact that many of the city’s buildings share a similar look and feel. With artillery strikes raining down all over, they moved all documentation and records to an inconspicuous building under the cover of night.
FIELD HOSPITAL
Show image
As the Conflict of Nations raged on and the fighting made its way into Rugosa city, officials had no choice but to relocate the hospital. While the Grand Rugosa Hotel would have been a large enough location, it was also a predictable one. To protect the lives of the city’s medical professionals, as well as the wounded soldiers and civilians in their care, an inconspicuous residential apartment building was chosen instead. The residents living in those apartments were ordered to clear out and seek accommodations elsewhere. Their personal belongings were thrown to the side to make room for as many beds and cots as possible.
GAS STATION
Show image
There were many gas stations or vehicle repair shops in the city leading up to the Conflict of Nations. During the wartime effort, fuel quickly became a resource reserved for military vehicles and ambulances. At first, the people who were fortunate enough to own a private vehicle complained, but as the roads started to become more and more littered with makeshift cover-barriers and mangled by artillery strikes, they realized that driving wasn’t a real possibility anymore. Their vehicles were left abandoned and, in many cases, repositioned to serve as blockades.
CANAL BRIDGES
Show image
For decades, their construction was meant to improve civilian mobility throughout the city, but the canal bridges ended up serving as a point of contention during the Conflict of Nations. As Terragonian forces drew nearer to them, the Acacian military was the last line of defense for those looking to evacuate the city from the Grand Rugosa Hotel. With the Acacian military being vastly outnumbered, things were looking grim. But just as control of the bridges was going to be lost, a new threat emerged. All of a sudden, who controlled the bridges was the least of anyone’s concern.
FABER LABS OFFICES
Show image
Until the prison island’s lighthouse tower was laced with strange alien technology, the exterior of the entire facility appeared untouched after Faber Labs took the tower over. From the outside, it looked like nothing was happening. Many civilians gazed out at the distant island from the shoreline and wondered what Dr. Selena Faber was up to in there. For the select few who were able to step inside, it was like entering another world. A world of unprecedented possibilities. The old offices and cell blocks were littered with strange machines and equipment that your average person wouldn’t even know how to describe, let alone explain.
FABER LABS RESEARCH
Show image
It’s clear that not everything Dr. Selena Faber had her scientists working on was for the betterment of humankind. Furthermore, there was an entire cell block of the old prison that was completely off-limits to all except her. There’s no telling what she was working on in that portion of the labs.
SHORELINE APARTMENTS
Show image
Reveal story — spoilers
Once part of a peaceful neighborhood of hard-working citizens, this apartment complex by the shoreline was the kind of place many hoped to live. The view of the water and the sound of it slapping against the retaining wall were a draw for most. As the Conflict of Nations drew closer, those who lived there were forced to evacuate. And ever since the Rifters arrived, the complex has become a place to avoid altogether - unless a fight against the enemy is what you want. The ground beneath the structures appears to be a hotspot for Elixium deposits. The Rifters have been bringing in their Harvesters to extract the mineral from deep underground for quite some time.
BUS DEPOT
Show image
Reveal story — spoilers
After the Second War of Independence, the population of Rugosa City increased substantially. As a result, a more robust public transportation network was needed that went above and beyond the aging trolley car system. This not only brought about job opportunities for bus drivers, it also created the need for a facility to repair, store, and maintain the large vehicles. The bus depot employed many people in the city before they were drafted to fight against the Terragonian army.
STABILIZER DISHES
Show image
Reveal story — spoilers
No one had any idea what Dr. Selena Faber was doing when she placed several strange-looking antennas on various rooftops throughout the city. She claimed it was to make a vast network of data that would revolutionize how people communicated. Telephones would become a thing of the past. Despite many complaints from civilians, she was operating with permits she obtained from the city.
SELENA’S APARTMENT
Show image
Reveal story — spoilers
No matter how eccentric Dr. Selena Faber was, she tried to fit in as best she could amongst the people. Although she could afford to live in the most expensive areas of the city, she chose to live in a modest apartment. Little did her neighbors know that they were living next to a Rifter for about twenty years.
REQUIRED TOOLS
Show image
Some items are located behind encrustations or in out of reach areas.
They can’t be collected until specific abilities are acquired through the story.
WEAK SURFACES
Show image
Cracked surfaces can be blown open with explosives.
Destroy weak surfaces to create new paths and access hidden items.

BREAKING ENCRUSTATIONS
Show image
With the resonator darts the Thorns created emitting the appropriate frequency, Elixium encrustations can be destroyed by firing a dart into them. The raw Elixium within them is energized, causing the mass to explode. The blast can break open weak walls and ceiling, but it can also harm anyone standing too close to them.
TELEPORT
Show image
Each Thorn has their own Teleporter device to use in exploration as well as in combat.
Throw the device to teleport the active Thorn to its location.
Enables the Thorns to teleport to a new position and access out-of-reach areas.
Out of combat, the Thorns teleport as a group to where the device is thrown.
During combat, the active Thorn teleports individually with a cost to their AP.
TELEPORT TO UPPER FLOORS
Show image
To teleport to a floor above a Thorn, use the multi-floor offset to gain visibility of it.
Position the teleport destination on the floor above to access unreachable areas.
REWARD RIFTS
Show image
After every combat encounter, a rift appears in the area.
On interacting with these rifts, a reward chest teleports in.
Reward chests automatically open, where 1 of 3 random items can be selected.
After selecting an item, the reward chest teleports away.
The rarity of the items available, depends on your current Heat Level.
