Combolands Beginner Guide: Buildings, Guilds & Combos
Learn Combolands with a practical beginner guide to building triggers, crop combos, house upgrades, guild unlocks and choosing useful heirlooms.
Build around one repeatable scoring engine. Check what triggers a building, which targets it needs, and whether those targets must be adjacent or merely in range. Add supporting buildings before spending on another engine that competes for the same space.
Read the trigger before the score
A building's effect has two separate questions: what activates it, and what it counts after activation. A high score per target does little when the trigger rarely occurs. The building database keeps trigger text alongside target categories and range so you can check the complete interaction.
For example, Ranch triggers every four weeks and scores 40 points per Husbandry building within its base range of two. Windmill responds to an adjacent Crop transforming, then counts Residence and Training buildings within range four at 40 points each. A Residence in range supports the payout; it does not replace the adjacent Crop that starts the effect.
Keep these roles separate when placing pieces. Reserve a trigger position beside the engine, then use the wider scoring area for the target categories. Before taking a new building, identify an existing trigger and an existing target it can actually use.
Adjacent, in range and connected mean different things
Do not treat these words as interchangeable. An effect asking for an adjacent building is more restrictive than one asking for a target in range. Connection rules can also be specific: Irrigation must connect to Reservoir or another Irrigation piece and explicitly does not connect diagonally. Use the placement preview to check the connection before committing.
Terrain is a separate requirement. A tile can have the right nearby buildings and still be the wrong surface. Database terrain labels summarize the base surface rule; additional restrictions, such as needing nearby Rocks or empty neighboring tiles, remain in the effect description.
Build a small crop engine
Reservoir gives an Irrigation blueprint when created and lets adjacent Crops grow in one week. Irrigation extends that support along a connected chain and also makes other adjacent buildings count as Farm. Plan the water connection and crop positions together, rather than filling all open tiles first.
A Wheat Field has a base growth time of three weeks and grants a Reroll and a Remove when it grows and triggers. That makes the choice about more than immediate points: the crop can also supply resources for later decisions. A Fruit Orchard instead provides 70 points on growth and gains +1 Mult when adjacent to an Apiary.
Once Crop transformations are happening regularly, put Windmill beside a transforming Crop and support its scoring area with Residence or Training buildings. The combination has three parts: growth support, the transformation trigger and the buildings counted for points. Missing any one of those parts reduces its value.
Pitchfork adds a base 20% chance for a transforming Crop to trigger a random adjacent building. Position useful targets nearby, but do not budget as if every transformation will activate the extra effect. It is a chance-based addition to the engine.
Follow the house upgrade chain
Civic houses progress through specific support categories. The chain is Plot → Hut → Homestead → Tenement → Townhouse → Estate. A building in the relevant category must be in range of the house or adjacent to it. Check the next requirement before placing support that only helps an earlier stage.
| Current house | Support needed | Next stage | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plot | Irrigator | Hut | 80 |
| Hut | Provisioner | Homestead | 100 |
| Homestead | Healing or Trader | Tenement | 130 |
| Tenement | Entertainment or Training | Townhouse | 170 |
| Townhouse | Luxury or Sacred | Estate | 220 |
This is a sequence of different requirements, so placing several copies of one support category will not carry a Plot through every stage. Search building tags for the missing category and preserve space for that support. The scores shown are base values before other effects change the result.
Buy support for what your city already does
Search the heirloom database using the engine's key word, such as Crop, Nature, Residence or Reroll. Then read the condition. A useful effect must match something the current city can trigger repeatedly, not just a combination you hope to draft much later.
For a Crop setup, Grain Cereal gives adjacent Husbandry +0.1 Mult whenever a Crop transforms. Pitchfork provides another possible activation. These support different layouts: Grain Cereal needs Husbandry beside the transforming Crop, while Pitchfork needs a useful building to receive its random trigger.
Base buy prices help compare items, but the current shop price remains the amount you pay. Keep enough spending room to finish the missing piece of an engine. Buying several unrelated bonuses can leave every setup incomplete.
Saved resources can become scoring inputs
Vault uses ten times your current Gold as its base score and triggers every three weeks. Shrine uses fifty times your current Rerolls on the same base interval. Spending those resources changes the next payout. Their placement requirements also differ: Vault needs empty adjacent tiles, while Shrine needs at least three adjacent Nature buildings.
Pick the next guild unlock deliberately
Agricultural and Frontier are available from the start. Martial unlocks after starting one run. Civic asks for 30 consumables used, Commercial for 200 Gold earned, Maritime for 45 heirlooms equipped and Industrial for 2,000 buildings created. These are progression targets; check the game's unlock screen for your remaining amount.
The guild page lists each starting pool and the ordered level rewards. For example, Agricultural progression unlocks Pitchfork at level five and Windmill at level six. Seeing a building in the database does not mean it is already unlocked or guaranteed to appear in the current run.
When a city stalls, identify whether the problem was missing unlocks, an unreliable trigger, a shortage of valid targets or a placement mistake. That gives the next run a concrete adjustment: pursue one unlock, improve one engine's layout or choose support for a category already present.
Common questions
Is Combolands a citybuilder or a roguelike?
It combines both: you place buildings into a small city while developing scoring combinations through a run. The official title is Combolands: Roguelike Citybuilder.
Why do two buildings have similar effects?
Some entries represent related forms or upgrades. The database groups matching crop growth states under the main crop entry, while differently named house stages remain separate because their requirements and results change.
Why is my result different from a listed value?
The library displays base effects from the October 11 snapshot. Mult, upgrades, guild effects, equipped heirlooms and current resource totals can alter a city's result. Start by checking those modifiers and the exact trigger condition.
