Combolands Map Layout & Placement Guide

Plan Combolands layouts around adjacency, range, connected networks, open tiles, terrain and future combo pieces.

Reserve rules, not a fixed grid

A procedural island does not have one best 3×3 or 5×5 plan. Mark the tiles your trigger, target, terrain and connection actually require, then leave only those spaces open.

Give each engine a space budget

Start with the most restrictive relationship. Windmill needs a transforming Crop directly adjacent, then counts Residence or Training across range four. Vault cannot be adjacent to anything. Shrine needs at least three adjacent Nature. These are three different layouts; forcing all of them into one generic dense hub breaks at least one rule.

For every planned scorer, mark one trigger tile, its mandatory adjacent tiles and the larger target area. Fill flexible targets last. Town Bell can add range to adjacent buildings, but only place it when the extra ring contains useful targets.

Build connection spines before branches

Reservoir starts an Irrigation chain; Port, Crane and Quay anchor Maritime connections; Railway shares adjacency along a connected line. None connects diagonally. Place the anchor and an expandable orthogonal route before surrounding it with ordinary buildings.

Do not extend a network only because a tile is available. Every extra segment costs a placement and should expose a Crop position, create a useful Ship tag or solve a real adjacency problem before the milestone.

Use terrain zones with different jobs

Potions are best used to repair one identified terrain bottleneck. Changing the map before the needed building and its partners are known can simply replace one unusable tile with another.

Create a replaceable removal lane

Keep disposable resources and buildings near several removal payoffs. Composter turns removals into Farm Mult, Guard Tower reacts to removal, Jousting Arena can turn it into Gold, and Fortress scores Fortification or Ship when something in range is removed. Avoid using a unique trigger or connection anchor as the disposable target.

Five checks before placing

  1. Does the tile satisfy the building's terrain rule?
  2. Is the effect asking for adjacent, in range or connected?
  3. Will this occupy a reserved Crop, Shoreline, Ocean, Nature or empty tile?
  4. Can the building trigger before the current milestone ends?
  5. If it consumes or removes something, does that target have another job?

Heirlooms and councillors are passive systems; they are not structures that need a central map tile. Use their effects to change which building cluster deserves the best space.
